    Islas de tiempo _Å//Ä//Ā_vol1-3

Islas de Tiempo is an audiovisual series that delves into critical data of the Balearic Islands, merging the fields of abstract coding, environmental science and data sonification.

Presented at Sónar+D Music Festival, these three pieces highlight different approaches to analyzing and interpreting environmental changes, particularly in and around the Bay of San Antonio de Portmany, Ibiza.

By utilizing critical data on marine pollution by microplastics and the warming of marine ecosystems, this series are the first of a bigger collection of works about environmental challenges faced by these islands.

Part 1: “ Sonar Signals of San Antonio Bay”
This piece draws from public data on pollution levels in the Bay of San Antonio, employing subaquatic sounds such as sonar radar signals and aquatic field recordings. Using Noah Pred’s sonification tool for Ableton Live, these sounds are transformed into an immersive auditory experience. The visual component utilizes a decade's worth of real footage recorded on the island of Ibiza, processed through video-to-video techniques.

    Part 2: “ Microplastic Symphony”

The second piece represents a hybrid approach to human-machine collaboration, focusing on critical data regarding microplastic levels in the Bay of San Antonio—one of the Mediterranean Sea's most polluted areas. This piece employs a geometric custom tuning system based on natural frequencies, creating an harmonic resonance that mirrors the data fighting with artificial sound artifacts created by the result of the microplastic pollution.

Part 3: “ Memories of Zē”

The final piece takes a lo-fi approach to neural networks and machine learning, utilizing custom made software named //Zē. This software processes and learns exclusively from life memories and experiences, developed by Yawa using opensource code of any kind. The outcome is a deeply personal and introspective auditory landscape, blending the organic with the artificial to reflect human impact on the environment and the fast degradation we actually facing.
